Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts believe the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
